Ecological Footprint Project - RO

Date: 2009-04-13

Ecological Footprint Project’s methodology is based on action research process:

1.       starting point: introducing the idea of ecological footprint

2.       collecting data/ information about: measuring students’ ecological footprint, measuring school’s ecological footprint, monitoring water (2 sites from the town)

3.       centralize and interpret the collected data: statistical interpretation of students’ ecological footprint, of energy & gas & water school’s consumption, of 75 students (from our school) eco-behaviour, PH and O2 in the water from the 2 sites

4.       presentation of the collected data: in the school & local community

5.       action plan for reducing the students’ & school’s ecological footprint

6.       implementing the action plan for reducing the students’ & school’s ecological footprint

Students were actively involved in all the project’s phases:

-          project team (teachers and students) developed the concept of the project;

-          students from the 9B grade were learning together about the ecological footprint concept during the starting activity of the project;

-          students calculated their personal footprint by filling in the quiz from http://www.myfootprint.org/en/visitor_information/;

-          students from the 9B elaborated a survey which they applied to 25% of the high-school students; survey’s aim was to find out the eco-behaviour of the students in 4 areas: energy, mobility, recycling, food;

-          students from the 9B grade interviewed the school’s administrator for finding out the water, energy, gas school’s consumption;

-          students from the 9B grade monitored the water (PH and O2) – 2 sites from the town (they used Monitoring Water Day kit);

-          students from the 9B grade centralized the information they collected;

-          project team (students and teachers) centralized all the collected information & data;

-          students from the 9B grade informed the school’s community and Green Echoes Association with their findings;

-          each student from the 9B grade elaborated a plan for reducing its own ecological footprint and implemented the plan;

-          students from the 9B grade elaborated a short-term plan for reducing the school’s ecological footprint and implemented the plan;

-          students from the 9B grade celebrated the end of the project.

This project contributed to motivate students in adopting a sustainable way of life.
